BCC Spearheads New Business Council to Rival Crisis-Hit CBI

In a strategic move to influence the trajectory of Britain’s economy, the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC) has introduced a new lobbying group – The Business Council.

The organisation counts giants such as Heathrow, BP, IHG Hotels & Resorts, and Drax among its founding members, bolstering its influence right from inception.

Crisis at CBI

The introduction of The Business Council comes at a time when the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) finds itself embroiled in scandalous sexual allegations.

The controversy-ridden institution now faces a decisive vote on potential reforms, backed by 13 organisations, including manufacturing behemoth Siemens and global software leader Microsoft.

A Looming Battle for Affiliation

The BCC is known for its robust support and connection network for companies both in the UK and abroad.

Renowned for its insightful quarterly economic survey, the BCC has a long-standing history of providing valuable perspectives on the business landscape.

The Business Council, under the leadership of BCC director general Shevaun Haviland and president Baroness Martha Lane Fox, aims to drive initiatives targeting the digital revolution, people and work, net zero, Global Britain, and the High Street.

These areas represent critical facets of the future economy.

As the CBI grapples with crisis, The Business Council anticipates gaining favour with companies that recently severed ties with CBI.

This could mean that renowned firms like John Lewis and BMW could find a new home within the freshly minted Business Council.

The Launch Timing – Strategic or Opportunistic?

The timing of the Business Council’s launch hasn’t gone unnoticed, sparking debates about the BCC’s intentions.

While some hail it as a strategic move, others critique it as opportunistic, highlighting the nuanced dynamics of business and government relations.
